Cherry improves to an all-time record of 6-13 in the event. Jokiharju makes history: Portland Winterhawks defenceman Henri Jokiharju earned Jim Gregory Player of the Game honours for Team Cherry, setting a new event record for points by a defenceman with three assists to his credit. The Finnish rearguard became just the fifth player in the history of the event to register at least three assists, and is the first defenceman to earn Player of the Game honours since Ryan Murphy (Kitchener Rangers) of Team Cherry in 2011. Goals galore: The goals kept coming in Quebec City as Team Cherry and Team Orr combined to light the lamp 12 times, tying an event record matched in 1996, 2005 and 2008. Team Cherry's power play was particularly effective, striking three times to mark just the second time in the event's 22-year history that a team has scored three goals on the man advantage. Spreading the scoring around: A record 12 different goal scorers found the back of the net in the 7-5 win for Team Cherry, a new event record. Goals were scored by Cherry’s Isaac Ratcliffe (Guelph Storm), Antoine Morand (Acadie-Bathurst Titan), MacKenzie Entwistle (Hamilton Bulldogs), Maxime Comtois (Victoriaville Tigres), Gabriel Vilardi (Windsor Spitfires), Owen Tippett (Mississauga Steelheads), and Jake Leschyshyn (Regina Pats).  Team Orr replied with marks from Sasha Chmelevski (Ottawa 67’s), Michael Rasmussen (Tri-City Americans), Nico Hischier (Halifax Mooseheads), Kailer Yamamoto (Spokane Chiefs), and Stelio Mattheos (Brandon Wheat Kings).  This surpasses the prior mark of 11 set in 2008. QMJHL players make their mark: All five QMJHL skaters had points as Nico Hischier (1-2--3) of the Halifax Mooseheads, Antoine Morand (1-1--2) of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Maxime Comtois (1-0--1) of the Victoriaville Tigres, Antoine Crete-Belzile (0-1--1) of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, and Pierre-Olivier Joseph (0-1--1) of the Charlottetown Islanders made the most of their opportunity. WHL goaltenders get the win: Stuart Skinner (Lethbridge Hurricanes) and Ian Scott (Prince Albert Raiders) combined to record the win for Team Cherry, marking the first time a pair of WHL goaltenders have worked together to claim victory since 2000 in Toronto when Brent Krahn (Calgary Hitmen) and Davis Parley (Kamloops Blazers) won with Team Orr. Skinner turned aside 17 of the 18 shots he faced in relief of Scott to pick up the 'W'. Captains on the radar: Captains Nolan Patrick (Brandon Wheat Kings) of Team Cherry and Nico Hischier (Halifax Mooseheads) of Team Orr were closely observed after entering action ranked first and second respectively on NHL Central Scouting's Midterm Draft Rankings for North American skaters. The two didn't disappoint as Patrick recorded two assists and Hischier earned Jim Gregory Player of the Game recognition for Team Orr with a goal and two assists.  This marked the first time since 2013’s Seth Jones (Portland Winterhawks) and Nathan MacKinnon (Halifax Mooseheads) where opposing captains were ranked first and second prior to the event. Bulldogs make their debut: Hamilton Bulldogs forwards MacKenzie Entwistle of Team Cherry and Matthew Strome of Team Orr became the first players in team history to suit up at the Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. Entwistle finished his night with a goal and an assist in the victory while Strome, who had hoped to reverse the family fortunes at the event, came up short in the 7-5 loss. Older brothers Ryan (2011) and Dylan (2015) didn't come nearly as close in their attempts at victory, both losing by six goal margins. Gagne gets the win: Team Cherry coach Simon Gagne got the win behind the bench, joined by assistants Philippe Boucher (Quebec Remparts) and former Remparts and Quebec Nordiques forward Pierre Lacroix. Gagne coached against Team Orr bench boss and QMJHL coaching legend Guy Chouinard, the second-winningest coach in league history.  Gagne becomes the 10th different head coach to earn a win in this event following Don Cherry (5 wins), Bobby Orr (9 wins), Tiger Williams (2002), Michel Bergeron and Pat Burns (2007), Glenn Anderson and Grant Fuhr (2008), Doug Gilmour and Wendel Clark (2011), Pat Quinn (2012), Mike McPhee (2013), and Tim Hunter (2014). Formenton turns heads in Sport Testing Combine: London Knights winger Alex Formenton got himself noticed in Sunday's Sport Testing Combine, finishing in the top five players for both on and off-ice results. The rookie forward faired well in on-ice tests that included transition agility, transition agility with the puck, weave agility, weave agility with the puck, reaction and reaction with the puck. Off the ice, Formenton showed particularly well in the vertical jump excercise. Full Results The 2017 Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game featured 40 of the Canadian Hockey League’s top players eligible for the 2017 NHL Draft which takes place June 23-24 in Chicago.]]> Kailer Yamamoto – On-Ice Sport Testing /video/kailer-yamamoto-on-ice-sport-testing Thu, 02 Feb 2017 01:57:36 +0000 /video/kailer-yamamoto-on-ice-sport-testing Post Game – Team Cherry (7) – Team Orr (5) /video/post-game-team-cherry-7-team-orr-5 Tue, 31 Jan 2017 05:12:11 +0000 /video/post-game-team-cherry-7-team-orr-5 Highlights – Team Cherry (7) – Team Orr (5) /video/highlights-team-cherry-7-team-orr-5 Tue, 31 Jan 2017 04:19:58 +0000 /video/highlights-team-cherry-7-team-orr-5 Photos: 2017 Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game /gallery/photos-2017-sherwin-williams-chlnhl-top-prospects-game Tue, 31 Jan 2017 04:02:28 +0000 /gallery/photos-2017-sherwin-williams-chlnhl-top-prospects-game Offence on full display as Team Cherry wins 7-5 /article/offence-on-full-display-as-team-cherry-wins-7-5 Tue, 31 Jan 2017 03:32:27 +0000 /article/offence-on-full-display-as-team-cherry-wins-7-5

  • "That was a lot of fun, I'd love to play with guys like that every night," said Jokiharju post-game. "I really enjoyed playing with (Antoine) Crete-Belzile (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada). I feel like we were on the same page all night and played really well together." Player of the Game honours can't hurt your status ahead of draft day, but Jokiharju had other things on his mind. "I wasn't really thinking about it that way," he said. "I just wanted to make the most of my opportunity and it turned out to be a really awesome night." Brandon Wheat Kings forward Nolan Patrick finished the night with two assists in the win. After recently being listed as the top draft eligible North American skater in NHL Central Scouting's Midterm Rankings, the Winnipeg native was pleased with his effort. "I thought I got better as the game wore on and I really liked my linemates," he said. "It's intense, everyone is trying to showcase themselves, but it was also a lot of fun and it was nice to get the win." The goals came early and often in the opening period as offensive talent rose to the surface. Isaac Ratcliffe (Guelph Storm) and Antoine Morand (Acadie-Bathurst) scooped up first period rebounds for Team Cherry while Team Orr had goals on highly skilled plays from Sasha Chmelevski (Ottawa 67's) and Michael Rasmussen (Tri-City Americans), leaving the two sides knotted at two after 20 minutes. Cherry and Orr were all square with 11 shots apiece to start the second before an offensive explosion ensued. Team Orr came out of the gate with gusto as Hischier was sent in alone on a pass from Nikita Popugaev (Prince George Cougars) before converting on a nifty backhand deke to put Team Orr ahead 3-2. MacKenzie Entwistle would answer back just nine seconds later though, snapping a shot into the back of the net after Team Cherry controlled the centre ice faceoff. Jokiharju found an open Entwistle who sent a hard release past Alex D'Orio (Saint John Sea Dogs). Tied 3-3, another pair of bang-bang goals would keep the game tied in the eighth minute of the second frame. Maxime Comtois (Victoriaville Tigres) and Kailer Yamamoto (Spokane Chiefs) exchanged markers 46 seconds apart, spelling the end of the night for both goaltenders shortly thereafter. Team Cherry's Ian Scott (Prince Albert Raiders) turned aside 13 of the 17 shots he faced while D'Orio made 15 saves on 19 shots. Michael DiPietro was greeted by teammate Gabriel Vilardi just over six minutes into his time in the crease as his Windsor Spitfires teammate stuffed a rebound underneath his pad from close quarters to give Team Cherry a 5-4 lead after two periods. The offensive pace slowed in the opening half of the third before Mississauga Steelheads winger Owen Tippett took out an insurance policy on the Team Cherry lead, hooking up with Patrick and Cal Foote (Kelowna Rockets) on the power play at 11:28. Down a pair of goals and desperate to draw even, Team Orr pulled DiPietro with over two minutes left on the clock and the move paid dividends. With the extra attacker on the ice, Brandon Wheat Kings forward Stelio Mattheos sent a quick release over the shoulder of Team Cherry netminder Stuart Skinner (Lethbridge Hurricanes) to bring his team within a goal down 6-5. A Jake Leschyshyn (Regina Pats) empty netter would seal the deal for Team Cherry though, ending their six year drought in a 7-5 final. Skinner turned aside 17 of the 18 shots he faced in relief to record the win in goal while DiPietro made 14 saves for Team Orr. Team Cherry had a slight edge on the shot clock, outshooting Team Orr 36-35 while going 3-for-4 on the power play. Team Cherry improves to an all-time record of 6-13 at the Sherwin-Williams CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game on a night where the goals kept coming and the CHL's top young prospects left it all on the ice.]]>
